Bush explains reaction upon learning of 9/11 attacks

Former President George W. Bush says what some people took as his apparent lack of reaction to the first news of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks was actually a conscious decision on his part to project an aura of calm in a crisis.

In a rare interview with the National Geographic Channel, Bush reflects on what was going through his mind at the most dramatic moment of his presidency when he was informed that a second passenger jet had hit New York's World Trade Center.

Bush was visiting a Florida classroom when Chief of Staff Andrew Card whispered into his ear , "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack." The classroom scene was caught on TV film and has often been used by critics to ridicule his apparently blank face.

"My first reaction was anger. Who the hell would do that to America? Then I immediately focused on the children, and the contrast between the attack and the innocence of children," Bush says in an excerpt of the interview shown to television writers on Thursday.

Bush said he could see the news media at the back of the classroom getting the news on their own cellphones "and it was like watching a silent movie."

Bush said he quickly realized that a lot of people beyond the classroom would be watching for his reaction.

"So I made the decision not to jump up immediately and leave the classroom. I didn't want to rattle the kids. I wanted to project a sense of calm," he said of his decision to remain seated and silent.

"I had been in enough crises to know that the first thing a leader has to do is to project calm," he added.

The National Geographic Channel will broadcast the hour-long interview on Aug. 28 as part of a week of programs on the cable network called "Remembering 9/11" that mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

The interview was recorded over two days in May, without any questions being submitted in advance, the channel said.

National Geographic said Bush gives "intimate details" of his thoughts and feelings in a way never seen before. Most of the interview is about the first minutes and hours of the day that Islamic militants hijacked four planes and crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Executive producer and director Peter Schnall said Bush, who has adopted a low public profile since leaving office in January 2009, brought no notes to the interview.

"What you hear is the personal story of a man who also happened to be our president. Listening to him describe how he grappled with a sense of anger and frustration coupled with his personal mandate to lead our country through this devastating attack was incredibly powerful," Schnall said.

U.S. television networks are planning a slew of specials to mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks. Those on National Geographic also include a documentary on the continuing U.S. war on terror, and stories of ordinary people on Sept. 11, 2001, called "Where Were You?"

Haiti cops search for man seen with gun near pres (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? Police are searching for a man seen holding a rifle in a crowd as Haitian President Michel Martelly walked through a busy street in northern Haiti, a police official said Thursday.

Joany Caneus, police director for Haiti's northern region, said witnesses have told investigators that the gunman was standing among people watching Martelly pass by on foot Sunday in Haiti's second largest city, Cap-Haitien.

Caneus said the man planned to assassinate Martelly, but declined to say how he knew that. Saying the investigation was continuing, he would say only that witnesses reported the man was carrying either an M-1 or an M-14 rifle.

Inaugurated in May, Martelly showed up in Cap-Haitien on Sunday to promote tourism in the northern region. He unveiled plans for construction of a major road and extension of an airstrip at the city airport.

No shots were reported fired at him, but the visit turned unruly. Protesters lobbed rocks and soda bottles at the new leader and his entourage as they walked through a street near the airport.

Martelly's escorts tried to get him to climb into one of two slow-moving SUVs but he declined and kept walking. Police fired shots in the air to break up the crowd and people scrambled for cover.

Neither Martelly nor anyone else was injured.

Caneus said Thursday that police had arrested 32 people and brought them to the Haitian capital for questioning on the stoning.

Authorities haven't determined a specific motive behind the incident. But many Haitians are growing increasingly angry at politicians who don't quickly improve life in this nation burdened with poverty, natural disasters and disease ? even if it is a president who has been in office for less than three months.

In the well-documented case of the disappearance and murder of Laci Peterson, there's a timeline well built and offered a number of circumstances, the psychological one of the family is that Laci's pretty hard to debate set. Offered in the written testimonies of the reading, turned out many of the details, in this case proved to be oddly creepyindicated by much of what he said months.

While some people are shocked, skeptical and even has a disturbing crime, the vision offered by a psychic reader aware of the victim's family, there is a long history of a similar success through the records of some of the most famous unsolved crimes from the past offered century. Some of the information from the psychic investigator in the case was made ??famous Sam Son impressive, and afterArrest of David Berkowitz, has revealed much of this information to the public to much fanfare have been. Many hardened, long-standing members of the security forces have their views on all psychological phenomena through their work with psychics had on previous "cold" cases changed.

There were some spectacular failures as well. While not a criminal matter in itself, only last year celebrated psychic Sylvia Browne, as in a national radio show, during an occupation of WestVirginia miners were trapped underground. After an erroneous report that the miners had been found alive and well, Sylvia said publicly on the radio live knew that the miners were alive again and again repeated his earlier statement that it would be discovered in good condition. Once the message, even if they remained in the air that the miners were in fact all died except for one survivor, is his attempt to reverse all fodder for the skeptical pointer finger.

Gulf oil producers cut some output on Tropical Storm Don (Reuters)

HOUSTON (Reuters) ? Gulf of Mexico producers reduced oil and natural gas output on Thursday as Tropical Storm Don churned northwest toward the Texas Coast, where it could make landfall by the weekend.

Although Don has cut a small 7 percent of U.S. Gulf of Mexico crude output and 3 percent of natgas output according to government data by midday Thursday, analysts said the storm's relative weakness and position in the Gulf of Mexico made it unlikely to cause prolonged production outages or energy infrastructure damage.

BP Plc (BP.L), Shell (RDSa.L), Anadarko (APC.N) and Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) all cut output and evacuated workers from some platforms at sea.

Oil analysts were watching the storm's effect on energy production, while some agricultural observers eyed potential crop damage once the storm hits shore.

As of midday Thursday, 94,962 barrels a day of oil output were shut off in the Gulf due to Don, while 148 million cubic feet a day of natural gas production were offline, according to a U.S. government report.

Based on statements from oil companies about which Gulf platforms have been evacuated due to Don, Reuters data shows around 620,000 barrels a day of U.S. crude output capacity and around 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas capacity have been preemptively idled. In several cases, Gulf platforms have been producing far below their nominal capacity.

Don is the biggest threat to energy infrastructure in the 2011 Gulf storm season so far, prompting storm warnings.

But analysts and meteorologists said output cuts were precautionary and Don isn't likely to cause platform damage or affect output for long.

"Based on what I'm seeing right now, they'll have it back on Saturday morning. There won't be any significant damage unless the storm becomes more serious," said Houston-based cash crude analyst John Troland.

Weather Insight, a unit of Thomson Reuters, also said Don didn't appear to be a major threat to production.

"The storm doesn't have time to get really strong. And it's not really blowing up now," said Jerry Paul of Weather Insight.

Located in the central Gulf of Mexico, Don had winds of up to 45 miles per hour and could reach Texas by late Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

U.S. crude futures for September delivery settled 4 cents higher at $97.44 a barrel. Benchmark natural gas futures had risen in earlier trading, before falling on a bigger-than-expected build in domestic inventories reported by the U.S. Department of Energy.

PLATFORMS IDLE FOR NOW

Anadarko shut in all production from six oil and gas platforms in the western Gulf and evacuated all personnel, around 185 workers. Reuters data shows the Anadarko platforms have capacity to produce around 310,000 bpd oil and more than 1.1 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas.

BP said it would shut in the Atlantis oil and gas platform in the Gulf, which can produce as much as 200,000 barrels per day of oil, as a precaution against Don.

Exxon spokesman Patrick McGinn said his company shut in about 8,000 bpd of oil and 50 million cubic feet of natural gas, while evacuating support personnel from its facilities in the storm's path.

Shell (RDSa.L) Perdido platform in the western Gulf, with capacity to pump 100,000 bpd, has also been idled, the company said.

Two other BP Gulf platforms, Mad Dog and Holstein, although they were already shut for maintenance before Don's approach.

Other major Gulf producers, including Chevron Corp (CVX.N) and Apache Corp, (APA.N) were evacuating such support personnel as cleaning staff and cooks from some Gulf platforms.

Shell President Marvin Odum told reporters on Thursday that Gulf producers aren't necessarily more cautious about storms after BP's oil spill last year heightened regulatory scrutiny of safety.

"We run a very conservative program from that standpoint because hurricanes are so unpredictable," he said. "So if there's even a chance it's coming a certain direction or it could turn a different direction, we will tend to shut down those operations and evacuate all of those people."

The Gulf accounts for 29 percent of U.S. oil production and 13 percent of natural gas output, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The Gulf Coast contains around 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity and about 30 percent of U.S. natural gas processing plant capacity.

Gulf Coast refiners reported no cuts in crude processing, but several, including Lyondell, Exxon and BP, said they were closely monitoring Don or taking steps to ensure plants were prepared for severe weather.

The National Hurricane Center said Don was headed toward Corpus Christi, Texas, a major refining center located west of an even bigger one near Houston.

U.S. Gulf of Mexico crude production from federal offshore areas last year totaled 1.64 million barrels a day, Department of Energy figures show.

In oil exporter Mexico, production has not been affected so far, although state oil firm Pemex is monitoring Don and has convened its emergency response team, the company said.

Don is the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

In the agricultural sector, cotton farms in the southern coastal bend of Texas in Don's path are due for harvest next month August, with open plant bolls that a drenching could damage. The state's main cotton area is in west Texas.

What is real estate investing and is it good to invest in it ...

An ETF for REITs you mean?

Any way there are several ways you can begin to invest in real estate. A REIT or real estate investment trust is a kind of stock that represents a share in a RE investment company. REITs usually specialize in rental housing or commercial property. There are many specialties within these categories as well. Law requires REITs to pay out almost all income back to shareholders as dividends. REIT shares are usually pretty easy to buy and sell, so they are a decent way to start.

If you want to be a real real estate investor however, you have to buy and lease or sell property in your own right or with partners. One of the key reasons for this is leverage. When buyinf REIT shares you are buying straight-up equity. But when you buy a shopping center or rental house, a bank will lend you part of the money to buy, freeing up more cash to make improvements or buy additional properties.

This ability to leverage, receive income and tax deductions while realizing capital appreciation, (real estate inflation) over the long term is what makes RE investing so powerful. Most rich people in the US made a substantial portion of their fortune through RE investing, Good luck

Komen Affiliate outreach

BANGOR ? The Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has hired Regina Rooney, its first community outreach manager, to expand breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs throughout the state. The Komen Maine Affiliate was established in 1997 as an all-volunteer organization. The Komen Maine Affiliate hired its first full-time executive director in 2009 and has since expanded to three full-time positions.

The position of community outreach manager was created to expand the Komen Maine Affiliate?s efforts in breast health education and to further develop working relationships with service providers in Maine.

Rooney worked previously for Spruce Run, a domestic violence organization in Bangor. She also teaches women?s studies as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Maine.

?Regina brings a fresh outlook and energy to the organization, as well as experience,? said Sally Bilancia, executive director. ?We are extremely pleased to have Regina on board and look forward to expanding our outreach through the entire state.?

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement.

The Maine Affiliate of Komen for the Cure is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the local community, joining more than 1 million breast cancer survivors and activists around the globe as part of the world?s largest and most progressive grass-roots network fighting breast cancer.

Through events such as the Komen Maine Race for the Cure, the Maine Affiliate has invested more than $2.25 million in community breast health programs throughout Maine. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds generated by the affiliate stays in this state. The remaining income goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research. Talk on Lyme disease

BANGOR ? Emily Bracale, author and artist of ?In the Lyme-Light: Portraits of Illness and Healing,? will read from her book and discuss the symptoms, treatment and prevention of Lyme disease at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Bangor Public Library.

This book shares the author?s life with Lyme disease, but it speaks to all who have had similar contact with this illness.

Bracale said, ?Until recently, I, like many people, did not realize that Lyme disease could be so serious. Aware or not, anyone who plays outside in nature, gardens, hikes or sits out in grassy fields painting, as I often used to do, is a potential candidate for Lyme.?

After years of sickness, Bracale found she was a ?poster child for Lyme disease? and began the mentally and physically exhausting process of treatment and recovery. A former teacher and artist, she used paintings and writing to express her feelings and ideas about the disease.

Bracale created 28 paintings and collages with accompanying text. Each piece covers a different aspect of Lyme disease, from the confusion before diagnosis to the disease?s symptoms, such as fatigue, decreased concentration, memory disorders, muscle spasms and sleep disorders. Bracale will share her personal journey to help educate the public about the growing epidemic.

New home for OA

BANGOR ? Overeaters Anonymous, a support group, has moved its 10 a.m. Monday meetings to Boyd Place, 21 Boyd St.

?Individuals who eat compulsively have an issue with addiction and suffer just as the alcoholic does,? organizers said. ?People who eat compulsively can get help in Overeaters Anonymous by learning to plan meals, change behaviors and admit that no matter the reason, they eat differently.?

For overeaters, it is about compulsion and not being able to control the progressive problems that come from overeating-undereating and the diseases that are associated with obesity, such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure; or those who are anorexic.

?There is hope in OA in that the person who has compulsive eating behaviors can learn a new way of living,? organizers said, ?and we call it abstaining from compulsive eating or behaviors related to eating patterns.?

Champion the Cure

BANGOR ? For 10-year-old Tommy Hosmer, charity begins at home. When his beloved grandmother Linda ?Mimi? Reilly Williams died of ovarian cancer in August 2009, Tommy wanted to honor her memory in a special way.

?I just wanted to help others with cancer like my Mimi had,? the Bangor boy said. And help he has.

With a book collection given to him by a neighbor and a special copy of ?Black House? donated by Stephen King, ?Tommy?s Book and Bake Sale? was born. The proceeds from the sale of donated bakery items, nearly 4,000 books and raffle tickets for King?s novel totaled $3,340.

Last September, Tommy proudly presented the check to Healthcare Charities for the endowment fund in Linda?s name. The fund supports CancerCare of Maine, where his grandmother was a longtime patient.

But Tommy?s philanthropic efforts didn?t stop there. For nearly two years, he has donated his Christmas money and savings to ?Mimi?s Fund.? He also is planning his next fundraiser, and this time he is considering a sports theme.

Tommy?s charitable spirit and dedication to helping those with cancer make him the choice for the 2011 Champion the Cure grand marshal. He will lead the 1K Family Fun Run at the Aug. 20 event, which raises funds for local cancer research.

Champion the Cure Challenge also features a 5K or 10K walk-run; 25-, 50- or 100-mile bike ride, and a 50-mile motorcycle ride.

To obtain more information about the Champion the Cure Challenge or to register or volunteer for the event, call Jeni Lloyd at 973-9628 or visit http://www.championthecurechallenge.org.

Honor for EMMC

BANGOR ? Whether it?s diagnosing and treating a patient with a heart attack or a patient with pneumonia, the consistent achievement of excellence in care is measured by state and national organizations.

Eastern Maine Medical Center is one of five hospitals, and the only specialty referral medical center in Maine, being recognized as a preferred provider for providing this consistent quality care for the past five years by the Maine State Employee Health Commission.

The other four are Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, Mercy Hospital in Portland, Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick and Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Using the Maine Health Management Coalition?s hospital rankings, which also include the national quality benchmarks of the Leapfrog Group, the Maine State Employee Health Commission designates EMMC as a preferred provider of health-care services for its members.

State employees who seek care at preferred provider organizations receive financial incentives such as waived deductibles for most services. There are some 3,000 state employees in EMMC?s hospital service area, which spans across central, eastern and northern Maine.

The Maine Health Management Coalition tracks performance in four major areas: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and the prevention of surgical infections.

?There are only five organizations in Maine who are receiving this designation this year,? said Frank Johnson, executive director of the Division of Employee Health and Benefits. ?We are very pleased to recognize the dedication of the leadership and staff of Eastern Maine Medical Center in providing superior health care to the patients and families in this region.

Johnson and members of the commission presented a certificate commemorating this achievement to Deborah Carey Johnson, president and CEO of EMMC, on July 26.

Final Harry Potter Film Shatters Midnight Release Record (omg!)

Story photo: Final Harry Potter Film Shatters Midnight Release RecordDaniel Radcliffe | Photo Credits: Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.TV Guide

The final Harry Potter film has already shattered a record after its first day in theaters.

Photo gallery: The stars of Harry Potter, then and now

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 earned $43.2 million from its midnight showings alone, according to The Associated Press. That total beats the previous midnight record holder The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which earned about $30 million last summer. Harry Potter also brought in $2 million from IMAX theatres, which also was a record.

Analysts predict the final installment could rake in about $150 million in its opening weekend. The current holder of that record is The Dark Knight, which earned $158 million in its first weekend in 2008.

Success: Empty City, No Business, Carpool Lane, Unfinished Job ...

As a I predicted yesterday, the government is already trying to spin a story of success out of its outrageously overhyped closure of a stretch of a Los Angeles freeway. Contractor Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.?finished the first half of the demolition of a bridge along Interstate 405 17 hours ahead schedule. The road work attracted international fanfare and media panic that depleted activity throughout the City of Angels. The job will be finished next year, during another weekend-long closure of The 405 between Interstate 10 in the south and U.S. Highway 101 in the north.?

The Los Angeles MTA anounces the news with a propaganda photo as creepy and totalitarian as anything Rachel Maddow ever stood next to and got a got a deepdown tingle from:?

Carmageddon: Mulholland Bridge still standing after work completed July 17 2011.

But a California DOT spokeswoman warns against premature optimism, and describes the dire consequences of allowing drivers to think for themselves:

"So far, so good," California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Judy Gish told CNN early Saturday afternoon. She acknowledged Californians have now coined a new word to replace the "Carmageddon" buzzword.

"Carmaheaven, I've heard that," Gish said. "Well, you know, I think what's important to address is if people start driving as usual, we will have Carmaggedon.

"It's been relatively light because people have been listening to the message, and they are not out on the road. We want to make sure they don't get complacent and say, 'There's nothing to get alarmed about and I may as well go out.' And if they do, we may see those delays that we warned them about," Gish said.

I know you're all tired of hearing about Carmageddon. I was tired of Carmageddon myself days ago. But it should be noted that we had a textbook Public Choice phenomenon occur in Los Angeles, which attracted national media attention, and yet we are already in danger of believing this was a government success. We have the distributed costs of day-to-day shitty road conditions in L.A.; we have the concentrated benefits for a service of dubious public benefit (Kiewit is in line for a performance bonus, a good exercise in the math Los Angeles Chief Administrative Officer Miguel Santana once described to me: "In the public sector you get a bonus for doing your job"); and we have something I don't even think Mancur Olson predicted: the concentrated cost of having America's second largest city shut down for a weekend.?

Yet the people who have paid this last cost ? the good people of Los Angeles and Orange County and other parts of California, and even people from around the world who avoided LAX this weekend ? will not get any credit other than a pat on the head for heeding the government's warnings. In fact, they'll be expected to thank the authorities for a job well (make that half-) done. ?

Tips for Effective Skin Care

Skin care products are highly expensive. There are a lot of brands available in the market advertising to make you skin glow. But be very careful while using these products. Many of these products must not have proper quality and it can result in even worse conditions fro your skin. Your skin will be very sensitive especially in your face and will get many allergies.

To safe and healthy ways to keep your skin fresh is to use herbal skin care products. Mainly your skin will be having problems due to improper cleaning. Always keep your face and body clean. Drink lots of water, more water will wash out the unwanted substances from your body. The ageing problems with the skin are natural; do not be over conscious about that.

With age you skin loses its elasticity and will start wrinkling. Heredity is on of the major factor that determines the ageing of the skin. Some people are blessed with smooth and clear skin and they do not have wrinkling problems for a longer time. It is also possible for your skin to be glowing and smooth, for that you only have to?use herbal skin care products.

Do not fall in the fake advertisements of the cosmetic company; they only want the sale of their product. It is your duty to check the quality of the product you are using, especially for your face. Cleansing should be given more importance in skin care. Herbal products to clean your skin will make it free from sunburns and other pollutants. Acne problems can be cured by herbal products which will also make your skin a clean and fresh look. The cost effectiveness of herbal products is also an advantage to choose them for the health of your skin.

Online dating has become widely accepted despite being socially frowned upon when it first began. There are many advantages to online dating that people are becoming aware of that serve as a great foundation for beginning a relationship.

Not only are people introduced to a large network of people looking for companionship, but you are also given guidance by the dating site's personnel.

Online Dating Singles Share Commonalities

Everyone who joins a dating website is there for the same reason. They have grown tired of looking for love in all the wrong places and are excited to share common interests when they first meet or date people. This greatly improves your chance of starting an enduring relationship.

The barriers to entry of online dating are easy to overcome. All you need is an active Internet connection in order to start your online dating experience today.

At FindChumz we take the guesswork of trying to figure out what a member of the opposite sex is seeking. You know the intentions of everyone that you talk to and it is reassuring to know they took the time and effort to fully complete their profile to give an actual reflection of themselves just like you did.

Online Dating Interactions

Many people find that conversing with one another over the internet is a lot easier than in person, especially when you're meeting someone new. People tend to be more honest and to-the-point, which results in less emotional risk for all singles.

The playing field for both single women and men is level in dating websites. This is because women can just as easily search out a potential date as a man can, and it's acceptable!

Online dating eliminates the nervousness and worry of first impressions. If you have a pimple or a bad hair day or feel like you have absolutely nothing to wear on a date, you have the ability to put off meeting the person until you are 100% prepared.

First Step Energy Efficiency - Green Home Improvements

Every home is different, and the energy needs of one home may not be the same for the next. We understand that concept clearly. If the homeowner was involved during the construction process, there may be a whole array of differences from the neighbors home. Or maybe the home was bought years later after upgrades and improvements have been done. However; for new homeowners in a standard builder grade home, your work is cut out for you. These home?s are built for the homeowner to feel comfortable; skipping the steps, materials, and planning for an energy saving house. In fact, these home?s are usually the least energy efficient houses out there.

Don?t panic just yet. There?s a lot you can do to turn your predicament around, and stop the energy waste before you spend too much on your monthly bills. In a new home, odds are that you have standard builder grade windows installed. These types of windows that home builders place in new homes can release 30% of your heating in the winter months and 40% of your cooling in the summer months. That?s a lot of wasted energy! This also means that your air conditioner is working almost twice as hard than it needs to in order to replenish the escaping air.

By exchanging these builder grade windows, and installing windows that were made to withstand the elements and keep your energy in, you can reduce your energy costs by up to 33%! Now, don?t just go out to the first replacement window company you find. There is a lot of aspects of these companies before making a decision. If you?re nearby our offices in Texas, then you know that there are a ton of San Antonio windows companies in town looking to take your money, and most of them will deliver quality service. But be weary of those companies that make false claims about the quality of their windows.

The number one thing you can do (and if you?re here, you?re already doing it) is keep researching. Continue learning about energy efficient windows and the differences between the higher energy rated ones, and the low. Learn about the type of glass that is used, if it is dual or single pane, and whether there is a gas fill between the glass or not that keeps its energy efficiency over the years. Seals and weather strippings also play a major role in the amount of air that enters between your home?s windows.

When you are prepared to obtain a couple estimates on replacing your windows, ask for references. You want a contractor that has done quality work before, not someone who says they have learned from watching other installers in the past. Quality contractors can make your window project a stress reliever rather than a stress gainer. Remember to give the expert window contractors at Green Home Improvements a call when thinking about replacing your windows and receiving quotes.

Will the Karzai Clan Be Able to Hang On to Kandahar? (Time.com)

They came to bury Ahmed Wali Karzai from Afghanistan and beyond, flying in on charter planes and arriving in armored convoys to pay their last respects to the man dubbed the "King of Kandahar." Family and friends joined a funeral cortege of thousands as it made its way, under the watchful guard of helicopter gunships, from Kandahar City to the small village 12 miles away, where the Afghan President's half-brother was born in 1961. Among the mourners were government ministers, parliamentarians and provincial governors, some dabbing their eyes with the silk of their turbans. Shortly after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, President Hamid Karzai slipped off his moccasins and stepped into his half-brother's grave to bid the Kandahar strongman a last goodbye. Their relationship may not always have been easy, but those close to Karzai say it ran deep, and that the President has been devastated by Ahmed Wali's murder.

Then the King of Kandahar's brother was off from the village grave, whisked away in a motorcade of black SUVs before anyone could make another attempt against the Karzai family. (One guest had been less lucky but still fortunate, saved from a Taliban bomb blast as he traveled to the funeral by the reinforced armor of his car.) (See what the murder of Ahmed Wali Karzai means for the U.S. military mission.)

Back in Kandahar City at a fortress-like mansion, Karzai's first task was to anoint a successor to Ahmed Wali as de facto leader of the Popalzai tribe, from which the Karzai family hails. It was from his role as a tribal leader that Ahmed Wali drew much of his power, and Karzai chose another half-brother, Shah Wali Karzai, crowning him with a turban in front of the assembled chieftans. "Tribal leaders have proposed for me to replace martyred Ahmed Wali Karzai with Shah Wali Karzai as your tribal elder," Karzai intoned. It was the President's first move to repair the vast tear in Kandahar's political fabric that Ahmed Wali's death has left.

Yet although thousands turned out to mourn the late chairman of the provincial council, Ahmed Wali was a deeply divisive figure, responsible for alienating large swathes of Kandahari society. As recently as April last year, top NATO officials were publicly comparing Ahmed Wali with Don Corleone, the mafia boss in The Godfather movies. Many Kandaharis had bitterly denounced what they saw as an unfair distribution of resources, with wealth and power concentrated in the hands of Ahmed Wali and pro-Karzai cronies. Run-of-the-mill citizens were too frightened to mention him by name when speaking to reporters, and even Ahmed Wali accepted that intimidation and violence (although not by him, he claimed) were part of political life in Kandahar. "This terrorizing people is always in the air," he told this reporter in 2009 in the room next to the one where he would die Tuesday. "People breathe it. There will be attacks. The fear is there." (See "The Assassination of Ahmed Wali Karzai: Careful What You Wish For.")

That's why, despite concern in some quarters of a looming power struggle to fill Ahmed Wali's shoes, some Western diplomats and NATO officials say privately that his departure might turn out to be an important break. "If you're a believer in what we're trying to do, good governance and so on, then it's an opportunity - it has to be," says one NATO official. "The more of these old-school, warlord-type people we can get rid of, the better... It doesn't turn the place into a Jeffersonian democracy overnight. There are still lots of unsavory characters around... But if we're serious about what we're trying to doing [this has to be good]."

How things will go next are uncertain, although few expect Shah Wali Karzai to wield anything like his late brother's influence. True, his appointment as the leader of the Popalzai tribe, and the presidential backing he'll receive, will undoubtedly bolster his credentials. But elders say that he lacks the personal relationships that made Ahmed Wali so trusted among his own. The fact that Shah Wali's wife and children live abroad also dents his credibility. "The power will lie with the governorship from now on," says Abdul Khaliq Balakarzai, a Member of Parliament rom Kandahar. He says it will not be concentrated in the hands of a man who, for all his actual power, had a comparatively lowly job chairing Kandahar's provincial council. (See why Kandahar is on edge after the Karzai assasination.)

Candidates are already lining up to replace the incumbent governor, a mild-mannered technocrat from Canada said to covet a ministerial job in Kabul. The most prominent among them is Gul Agha Sherzai, a scion of Kandahar's second-most powerful family and himself a former Kandahar governor. Sherzai called Karzai within minutes of Ahmed Wali's death and flew immediately to Kandahar to attend the funeral, in what may have been a convenient cover to rally supporters. But there are other figures in the wings, too - Aref Noorzai, for example, a confidante of the President and linked to the Karzais by marriage. None is a standout candidate.

The uncertainties of the succession coupled with the U.S. troop drawdown that began on Wednesday have some worrying that internecine rivalry could push Kandahar into the abyss. Indeed, the Taliban have a track record of exploiting the deaths of powerful tribal leaders, and their rise in Kandahar can be linked in part to the death of one such man, Mullah Naqibullah, in 2007. But while no one should be surprised at a short-term spike in political violence in Kandahar, predictions of all-out warfare have proved unfounded in the past. "I think it's a valid point to say there may be a vacuum, and now all these contenders will [emerge]," says one diplomat. "But come on, it's not like Kandahar was particularly stable." And while they won't necessarily celebrate Ahmed Wali's death, some candidates for the governorship may see it as a chance to repair ties with those groups that Ahmed Wali pushed toward the insurgency. Only so far, though. As long as Afghan politics rests on a patronage system, there will always be have-nots.

See photos of the battle in Kandahar.

Eona: The Last Dragoneye by Alison Goodman Book Review

Eona: The Last Dragoneye by Alison Goodman is an epic conclusion to the wonderfully written Eon. Eona finally comes into her new found dragon power and must navigate life as a girl after being disguised as a male for SO many years. However, this is the least of her problems. Kygo, heir to the empire, has been usurped by his uncle, Lord Sethon. All are on the run in Eona: The Last Dragoneye from Sethon. Oh yeah and BTW the Black Folio from Eon with all those secrets about how to control the dragoneyes has been stolen by Dillon who is on a whole lot of sun drugs and has an addled brain.

Eona by Alison Goodman Book Cover

Eona: The Last Dragoneye

Y?all Eona: The Last Dragoneye has IT ALL. There?s action, dragons, war, politics, world building, romance and YAY FINALLY SEXYTIMES! I mean, I get why Eon did not have romance or sexytimes, but it was nice to finally get some making out scenes. And yes, there is a bit of a love triangle, but it?s one of those power-love dynamics and anyone who has ever read a YA book know that the love dynamic is going to win out over the power dynamic. The two rival males, Kygo and Lord Ido both represent opposite ends of the spectrum. And honestly, a few of my friends were team Lord Ido and I was team WHAT THE WHAT you can?t choose Ido over Kygo.

If sexytimes aren?t really your thing, you may be interested to know that there is legit sacrifice in Eona: The Last Dragoneye. Eona?s powers leave destruction in her wake, because not only does she have to contend with her mirror dragon, but she must also hold back the ten bereft dragons who no longer have dragoneyes to control them. Further, when Eona uses her power to heal, she binds people to her will. It?s a two-edged sword for sure. I mean, she can fix people, but at the same time, they are under her whims and control. And we spend much of the book struggling with this. Plus characters actually get killed off, and I should not be yay-ing that, but y?all YAY!

Okay and back to the romance. I think the romance actually helped me to enjoy Alison Goodman?s follow-up/sequel on the same level if not more than I did Eon. And I?m at that point where I am sequel-wary. However, this book perfectly wraps up the duology, leaving me with little questions.

You see, Eona makes this ridiculously hard decision which left me feeling melancholy, yet happy after closing the book. I like that feeling, where I ache for the characters yet understand why they do the things they do.

Obviously, I recommend this book if you are down for times of awesome and actually enjoy fantasy. If you dislike fantasy stay away.
