Favorite NCAA Tournament Memory

  1. Favorite NCAA Tournament Memory

NCAA at 75 - College Basketball - ESPN

What moment (Iowa State or another team) is your favorite moment of the NCAA tourney?

For me, I still remember VCU upsetting Duke with Eric Maynor against Josh McRoberts and Greg Paulus. Not a "huge" upset, but it put VCU on the map and it was the greatest clutch performance by a player I've seen in the dance.

Link above, Hawkeyes, avoid 64, Cyclones, avoid 32.

Chalmers' shot against Memphis in 2008 was pretty magical. Whole game was, really.

My oldest favorite non-ISU memory of the NCAA tournament was 1993 when 15-seed Santa Clara knocking off 2-seed Arizona. I hated Arizona and Lute Olson, I think because my dad hated Lute Olson since he was at Iowa. Steve Nash and Santa Clara knocking them out was awesome.

I watched the Duke-Kentucky game that Laettner won with 3 good buddies. We knew at that moment we had witnessed something amazing. It's almost as vivid as my memories of 911 and when Reagan was shot.

My favorite ISU memory was destroying UCLA in 2000.

The Ill/Arizona game posted reminded me of a scary, heavy (for me) wager I had on that game. AZ was a 4 or 5 point dog if I remember correctly and when they were up 15 with a few minutes left I thought I was sitting pretty. Then the Illinoisians got hot. It's ok, it's ok, it's ok, hmmm...just don't go OT, just don't go OT, just don't go OT. ****! OT!

Still covered, but when they went to OT I thought I was sunk. Helluva win by the team nameless team.

When Johnny Orr beat Michigan in the tourney. I think it was Billy Packer calling the game and Michigan jumped out to an early lead, he kept saying how ISU couldn't play with them and he got real quiet towards the end of the game.

  9. Re: Favorite NCAA Tournament Memory

Nurse's 3 in the elite 8. I really thought we were going to win with a little under 6 minutes left. The ISU fans in the arena were roaring, it was amazing. Alas not to be.

Smoking UCLA 80-56 in the Sweet Sixteen.

  11. Re: Favorite NCAA Tournament Memory

Illinois' comeback was part of an awesome two days of basketball. Three of the four regional final games went to OT, there was a great WV-Texas game, that WV team was really fun to watch, and then a double OT Michigan-Kentucky game.

I enojoyed watching this finish at work.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn?t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

Man, this is a tough one. Probably more "almost" great memories than great memories. The end of the ISU/Cinci game in 1997 is probably one of the best, but the UCLA/ISU one the next week is probably one of the worst.

Another great one was like the first 10 minutes of UNC/ISU in 1995. Beechum hit a 3, I think, and we went up 23-8...then ended the half down 27-25, or something similar.

The elite eight run was of course great, but more of a bad memory than a good one, unfortunately, although that MSU game was still a great game, at least for a long while.
