In doing so, I wanted to add a few links regarding my military past and began searching in general for 'all things Army'. I accessed a mountain-load of photos but nothing that quite hit the spot - they were all too general.
I then began to narrow down my search, became more specific, and 'Googled' the Army Apprentices College, Harrogate - my first step into the Army in 1980 aged 16 years old. This produced far better results, being more specific, and up popped a photograph of Scott Squadron, AAC, Harrogate, 1980 in which I appeared (back row - 4th from the left).
This photograph was on a site on Facebook with just TWO members - but linked to another Facebook site entitled 'Scott Squadron Reunion'. More specific yet, as Scott Squadron was one of four training Squadrons within the College itself.
To my surprise and delight, the site is vibrant, it has over 240 members and they have a reunion every year, including partners back in the lovely town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The next one is on the 16th March 2013, 6 days after I return home from my current period of work in Afghanistan (funny how these things work sometimes) and I have now connected with many 'old friends and comrades' from over 30 years ago. Many of whom I have not seen since 1983, when we Graduated.
That's the thing about this Networking 'malarkey'. The 'Business' and the 'Social' are joined at the hip. One without the other is a massive loss. We should always remember this.
This also provided me with a great reminder that in on-line Networking, keep our profiles current, be SPECIFIC in order to achieve the results we really want and take time to remember that Business Social Networking is not simply about making money.
Business Social NetWORKING can often throw up gifts far more precious than just pounds, shillings and pence, including whole new Networks of like-minded individuals, who can once again share memories and also look to the future with renewed vigour, confidence and aspirations.
Social Media? It's a funny old game.....
