Detroit Mayor No Federal Bailout for City — 'Yet'

When asked by ABC?s George Stephanopoulos about the possibility of a federal bailout for Detroit?s municipal government, former mayor Dave Bing said, ?Not yet.? He explained, ?I know the president has a lot on his plate, this is going to add tremendously to that.?

?It?s very difficult right now to ask directly for support,? Bing explained. ?I?ve gotten great support for this administration, I?ve gotten great support from a lot of different departments within the administration. They?ve been helpful.?

Michigan governor Rick Snyder was asked later on Sunday morning whether a federal bailout might be possible, and flatly said ?No.?

?I don?t expect one,? he explained, and ?the state cannot bail out the city? either. ?It?s not about just putting more money in the sitution?.?.?.?it?s about accountable government,? Snyder said. He did, however, raise the possibility of cooperative state and federal ?targeted programs? to help revive Detroit?s economy, mentioning one example already, a $100 million local, state, and federal program to start taking down some of Detroit?s 78,000 abandoned buildings.
