Series win for India against Zimbabwe but both Virat Kohli and Brendan Taylor still see room for improvement

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor was upset on Sunday after his team lost the bilateral series against India 3-0. Virat Kohli on the other hand was happy with his team's effort but said his fast bowlers needed to learn from the Zimbabwe pacers who effectively used the new ball.

In the series so far Zimbabwe have failed to win a single match in the series so far. Some of the team's players showed some spirit with their performance with the bat and ball but have failed to come together as a team and defeat India.

For India, Virat Kohli has contributed with the bat in the first and third ODI coupling a century with an unbeaten 68. Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra and the rest of the team have also risen to the occasion helping their captain lead the team to a series win.

For Kohli, this was the first time he was leading the side and this win will boost his morale.

"Was important to win to seal the series. Early breakthroughs with the ball, and not that difficult a total to chase down. We are not setting any goals, did not think we had to seal the series today. Zimbabwe still have some inexperience in the line-up and it is about gaining experience. I am one of the few experienced guys in this side and I am trying to take responsibility," said Virat Kohli after the win.

Brendan Taylor on the other hand speaking about his team's performance, "I think (the problem is) mental toughness. I don't think we're mentally sharp enough. We're just not making the precise decisions at the right time and not putting a real price on our wickets. Too many soft dismissals."

The skipper said dealing with Indian bowlers might be tough but not impossible and a bit of patience was all that his batsmen needed to have.

Virat Kohli while speaking to the media said though the team had a win under their belt he still saw room for improvement. The 24-year-old said, "Zimbabwe still have some inexperience in the (batting) line-up. Their bowlers have bowled in good areas. They know how to bowl on these wickets. They are using the two new balls well. Our fast bowlers can learn from them."

The next two matches will technically be dead rubber matches. But with both teams looking for improvements the upcoming matches promise to be better and closer if both teams achieve the improvements their captains are seeking.

Radio, TV personality David 'Kidd' Kraddick dies

David "Kidd" Kraddick, the high-octane radio and TV host of the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show heard on dozens of U.S. radio stations, has died at a charity golf event near New Orleans, a publicist said. Kraddick was 53.

The Texas-based radio and television personality, whose program is syndicated by YEA Networks, died at his Kidd's Kids charity function in the New Orleans suburb of Gretna on Saturday, said publicist Ladd Biro in releasing a network statement.

"He died doing what he loved," said Biro, of the public relations firm Champion Management, speaking with AP by phone early Sunday. He said he had no further details on the death.

The "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show is heard on more than 75 Top 40 and Hot AC radio stations and is a leader among most-listened-to contemporary morning programs, Biro said. The radio program also is transmitted globally on American Forces Radio Network while the show's cast is also seen weeknights on the nationally syndicated TV show "Dish Nation," he added.

"All of us with YEA Networks and the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" crew are heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend and leader," the network statement said. "Kidd devoted his life to making people smile every morning, and for 21 years his foundation has been dedicated to bringing joy to thousands of chronically and terminally ill children."

"He died doing what he loved, and his final day was spent selflessly focused on those special children that meant the world to him," it added.

The Dallas Morning News reported Kraddick had been a staple in the Dallas market since 1984, starting in a late-night debut. The newspaper said he moved into morning show work by the early 1990s in that market and his show began to gain wider acclaim and entered into syndication by 2001 as he gained a following in cities nationwide.

Kraddick would have turned 54 on Aug. 22, according to Biro.

The network statement said the cause of death would be released "at the appropriate time."

Many fans, celebrities included, tweeted condolences and talked about the death on social media sites. One Texas radio station where he was a mainstay ran photographs on its website of Kraddick at the microphone.

Word of Kraddick's passing spread quickly via social media.

"RIP Kidd Kraddick. You were an amazing man and a friend. You are already missed," Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted.

"Oh Man, I just heard Kidd Kraddick died! He's my childhood dj. What a sad day. His poor family. He was always nice 2 me from the beginning," singer Kelly Clarkson tweeted.

Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, only recently announced as the headline act of a planned first-ever Kidd's Kids charity concert in Dallas next month, wrote: "The sad sad news about Kidd Kraddick is shocking. He will be missed greatly."

Richie Tomblin, described as the head golf professional at the Timberlane Country Club in Gretna on its website, told AP that Kraddick wasn't looking well when he saw him getting ready for Saturday's charity event.

"He came out and he borrowed my golf clubs and went out to the driving range," Tomblin told AP when contacted by phone. "It's kind of a freaky situation. He came out. He practiced a little bit. He hit the ball at the first tee and wasn't feeling good and after that I didn't see him."

Tomblin said the hundreds of amateur golfers taking part went ahead with the event Saturday. He added he only found out afterward that Kraddick had died and he was still shaken about it.

"I'm still trying to figure it out. I really don't know what happened. Everyone keeps texting me asking, 'What's going on?' I really don't know," said Tomblin.

He added he was reluctant to even touch the set of clubs Kraddick had borrowed Saturday for his practice swings.

Hudson wedding party boat crash: Driver had 'signs of intoxication' - sheriff

A boat carrying members of a wedding party struck a barge in the Hudson River Friday night. The boat's operator was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter Saturday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Tracy Jarrett and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

The pilot of a speedboat that crashed into a barge on the Hudson River while carrying six members of a wedding party, including the bride-to-be, was charged on Saturday with vehicular manslaughter.

Jojo John, 35, was also charged with three counts of vehicular assault over Friday night?s crash, said Rockland County Sheriff William Barbera, according to Reuters.

"There were signs of intoxication," Barbera added, although lab test results were still pending.

John was in custody at Nyack Hospital Saturday night where his condition was ?critical,? according to hospital spokesperson Lauren Malone.

The best man, identified as Mark Lennon, was still missing after the accident. The search was suspended at 5 pm local time on Saturday and was set to continue on Sunday morning.

One female body was found discovered adrift and without a life jacket not far south of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Rockland County Undersheriff Robert Van Cura told NBCNewYork.com.

Four others remained in the hospital Saturday while investigators continued their search, it reported.

The Coast Guard said six people were on a 21-foot Stingray near Piermont, N.Y., when it hit the barge at around 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday near the bridge.

The accident happened shortly after the boat left Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said at a news conference on Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press.

"While the Rockland County Sheriff, N.Y. State Police and U.S. Coast Guard continue to investigate this tragic incident, the New York State Thruway Authority is conducting its own review of safety procedures on the Hudson River as part of the New NY Bridge Project,? said Brian Conybeare, special advisor to the governor, in a statement.

The bride-to-be, identified by family members as Lindsey Stewart, 30, was to get married on Aug. 10, relatives told NBC New York.

?Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," Conybeare added.

Groom-to-be Brian Bond, 36, is among the four injured passengers, who were described as suffering severe injuries, including head trauma and broken bones. Bond is in ?fair? condition at Westchester Medical Center, according to spokesman David Billing.

Some of those injured are awake and providing information to investigators. Bond, however, is currently unable to speak due to his injuries, Walter Kosik, the bride?s stepfather told NBC New York.

Police said that while it would have been dark in the area at the time of the crash, the barge was lit up.

"At this point, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC, has reported to the Thruway Authority that all Coast Guard lighting requirements were met and that the barges were properly lit Friday night. All lighting was checked Saturday morning and is fully operational at all barge locations associated with the project,? Conybeare said in the statement.

NVIDIA bringing Kepler GPU to mobile, will provide a single architecture across their product line

Kepler GPU slide

NVIDIA has released a bunch of information about the upcoming Kepler mobile GPU project. As a component on the Logan SoC, the Kepler will bring performance in gaming, multimedia and computational power that nobody would have thought possible just a year or so ago. They're calling it as big of a milestone as the GeForce GPU was on the desktop 14 years ago. Those are some big shoes to fill, and from what we've seen so far they just might be right.

The Kepler GPU will bring PC class performance and power to mobile, including full support of traditional desktop-only features like OpenGL 4.4, Tessellation, and DirectX11. The addition of full CUDA 5.0 support for raw computational power makes the Kepler a real piece of future tech, and the first of the next generation's mobile hardware. And it does it all using just two watts of power. Compare this to the current NVIDIA GeForce Titan desktop graphics card -- which supports the same feature-set and needs 450 250 watts of power to do it.

It all sounds really great, but if you really want it to rock your socks off, you'll need to see the demos. We've got them both embedded after the break, but you need to be aware of what you're seeing. Both the demos are digital renders, with no live action involved. Everything was drawn and rendered by the mobile Kepler GPU, and the effects are astounding. The "Ira" demo in particular, which has support for full tone mapping, bloom, FXAA 3.0, and full HDR. These are features that have previously only been available on PCs.

There are still plenty of other features about the Logan chips that we don't yet know -- including a street date. but what we're seeing from the GPU, which has always been NVIDIA's forte, get us excited for the future. Be sure to keep reading for some slides and the above-mentioned videos, you'll not want to miss this.

CDC: 250 in 6 states, including Texas, have unidentified stomach bug

WASHINGTON (AP) - More than 250 people in at least six states have come down with a stomach bug that could be linked to foodborne illness.

The Centers for Disease Control says the cyclospora infection causing diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms has been reported in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia and Connecticut. The CDC said 10 people have been hospitalized and most of the reported illnesses occurred from mid-June to early July.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the cyclospora infections, which are most often found in tropical or subtropical countries and have been linked to imported fresh produce in the past.

The illness is usually spread when people ingest foods or water contaminated with feces. The agency said it isn't yet clear whether the cases from all of the states are linked.

The number of reported illnesses expanded from more than 200 to more than 250 on Tuesday, according to the CDC. The CDC added Georgia and Connecticut to the list of affected states.

The agency said it is investigating additional illnesses and the number of those sickened could grow.

NFL, players union talking about HGH tests again

The NFL and players union are talking again about starting to test for human growth hormone as early as the upcoming season.

An email obtained by The Associated Press from the NFL Players Association indicates that the league and the NFLPA have jointly hired a doctor to conduct a study on the NFL's players to determine the threshold for a positive HGH test. The email was sent by the union to players, in part to explain that the study requires them to have blood drawn. The email said the blood samples will only be used for the study.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says the discussions are focused "on a full resolution of any remaining issues."

The labor agreement that ended the NFL lockout in 2011 requires the league gain union approval before testing players for HGH. The union says it favors testing, but has reservations about the appeals process.

Supplemental HGH is a banned substance that is hard to detect and used by athletes for what are believed to be a variety of benefits, whether real or only perceived ? such as increasing speed and improving vision.

Among the health problems connected to HGH are diabetes, cardiac dysfunction and arthritis.

Republican presidential hopefuls flood Iowa, but Democrats are scarce

DES MOINES, Iowa ? The next presidential election is more 1,200 days away, but Iowa, the state that traditionally hosts the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus, is already a hive of activity for politicians who are considering making a run for the White House.

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul and former Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Rick Santorum have made frequent trips to the state in the past few months. Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz paid his first visit to Des Moines last week and plans to return for a forum in Ames in August. Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker spoke to the Iowa Republican Party in West Des Moines in May and former Republican vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin has accepted an invitation to Altoona in November to toast Iowa Republican Gov. Terry Branstad on his birthday.

That?s a lot of Republicans! But hold on, where are all the Democrats?

Not in the Hawkeye State, that?s for sure.

?It is unbelievably quiet here,? Scott Brennan, the interim chairman of Democratic Party of Iowa told Yahoo News. ?There?s nothing. It?s just deadly still.?

While Republican presidential hopefuls already have begun their long march through Iowa?s 99 counties, most high-profile Democrats are laying low. There are several reasons for this, but a shortage of ambitious Democrats is not one of them. To this point, no Democrat worth a headline has crossed the Iowa state line in 2013, although Democratic Sen. Amy Kloubechar of Minnesota, a state that borders Iowa to the north, is planning to speak at a fundraiser for North Iowa Democrats in Clear Lake next month.

For starters, President Barack Obama was inaugurated to his second term only seven months ago. As the leader of the Democratic Party with three years of governing ahead of him, it would be uncouth for a parade of his fellow party members to launch very public campaigns to take his job this early. Many potential Democratic candidates are steering clear of Iowa because they know that if they so much as sneeze toward Sioux City, members of the media will be ready with their ?2016!? trumpets a?blazing. (For proof, see our recent breathless coverage of Republican visits to Iowa.)

?We?re focused on governing right now, and I think that?s where Democrats are coming from,? Iowa Democratic Party Executive Director Troy Price told Yahoo News. ?I think the party that?s out of power is much more excited to find their candidate for president than the party that?s in power.?

Democrats also are waiting to hear from two of their most high-profile leaders, Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden.

Clinton, who has served as a United States senator, a presidential candidate and as Secretary of State since she moved out of the White House in 2000, appears to be quietly preparing for yet another run for the nation?s highest office. Recent polling would suggest that the Democratic presidential nomination could easily be hers to lose if she wants it. As the second-highest ranking Democrat in the nation, Biden, who has not ruled out another presidential run, is in a similar position.

?I think people are just waiting to see what those two are planning,? Brennan told Yahoo News. ?I don?t think anyone feels like they are getting behind.?

Unlike the Republican Party, which has a wide bench of candidates but no clear leader, Democrats have two sluggers in Clinton and Biden that could edge out others who are thinking of running. Maryland Gov. Martin O?Malley, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for example, could make their decision about whether to run based on Clinton and Biden?s future plans.

Having already participated in the Iowa caucus in 2008, Clinton and Biden would enjoy the distinct advantage of having high name I.D. in the state if they choose to run again, a head start that candidates new to the national stage like Republicans Paul, Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio would have to work hard to grow over time. It could explain why so many Republicans are stopping by this early. Wooing Iowans, as history suggests, takes time, and Republicans in the state say they welcome the flood of newsmakers to the state.

?There?s a lot of momentum that has to be built in Iowa to be successful here,? Iowa Republican Party Co-Chairman David Fischer told Yahoo News. ?So you have to jump in and start building that name recognition if you don?t have it on the national stage already, meet with people and get them on board before they?re committed to somebody else.?

Detroit Mayor No Federal Bailout for City — 'Yet'

When asked by ABC?s George Stephanopoulos about the possibility of a federal bailout for Detroit?s municipal government, former mayor Dave Bing said, ?Not yet.? He explained, ?I know the president has a lot on his plate, this is going to add tremendously to that.?

?It?s very difficult right now to ask directly for support,? Bing explained. ?I?ve gotten great support for this administration, I?ve gotten great support from a lot of different departments within the administration. They?ve been helpful.?

Michigan governor Rick Snyder was asked later on Sunday morning whether a federal bailout might be possible, and flatly said ?No.?

?I don?t expect one,? he explained, and ?the state cannot bail out the city? either. ?It?s not about just putting more money in the sitution?.?.?.?it?s about accountable government,? Snyder said. He did, however, raise the possibility of cooperative state and federal ?targeted programs? to help revive Detroit?s economy, mentioning one example already, a $100 million local, state, and federal program to start taking down some of Detroit?s 78,000 abandoned buildings.

Weekend Edition ? A 1978 Ford Ranchero GT on eBay is a rolling contradiction of competing styles; Still, I want it?

Fullscreen capture 7212013 83643 AM.bmp

As far as Automotive Icons we appreciate here on Hooniverse, the Ford Ranchero ranks as one of the most coveted? Well, not as high as the El Camino, but I digress. I was looking through the Brown Car Appreciation Society Facebook page and came across the posting about this particular Ranchero. What was odd was the fact that the car/truck hybrid wasn?t Brown (well, maybe the tape stripes were somewhat brown). Still, do you think this car is Hooniversalustworthy?

Fullscreen capture 7212013 83836 AM.bmp

According to the listing:

1978 Beautiful survivor Ranchero. 54,779 miles Paint is very good and looks to be original. 351 / C6 GT package should be one of the most desirable built. Nice GT?s have been bringing $10 to $12K Several spare parts (new and NOS) included. Starts and runs but has not been driven for a while. The only problem I have found is the A/C Heat control knob seems disconnected. Car can be seen/inspected by appt. Located between Austin and San Antonio.

Fullscreen capture 7212013 83730 AM.bmp

This is being offered for sale by a friend of mine, if it fails to meet the minimum bid (AFTER THE AUCTION END) it will belong to me. My minimum (when/if I relist) will be closer to $7K I will keep it and drive it until I run across someone that wants it more than me.

Fullscreen capture 7212013 83713 AM.bmp

About those competing styles? This is a GT Package, but the truck comes equipped with Wire Wheel Covers and White Stripe Tires. Inside, you see there is a Bench Seat, and a Column Mounted Shifter? Not very GT Like. The fender trim seems more at home on an LTD, rather than a truck. But this was back in the late 70s, and Ford tended to have a mishmash of styles going on then. Anyway, the top bid so far is $3,750, with no reserve. See the listing here 1978 Ford Ranchero GT, and let me know what you think.

Google's Chrome app launcher now available for all Windows users

Google's Chrome app launcher now up for grabs on Windows

Though there's no official word from Google yet, it looks like the Chrome launcher has come out of developer preview mode and into full release, at least for Windows. On our own PCs, the installation placed the launcher app on the start page, taskbar and desktop for Windows 8 and in Windows 7's menu bar. From there, you can quickly access Chrome, the Chrome store, Gmail and any other apps that work with Google's ubiquitous browser / OS. We're not sure when it'll hit OS X or Linux (Chrome OS users have had it for awhile), but if your Windows workflow revolves around Mountain View's myriad products, you can enable it at the source.

[Thanks, Adam]

Senators reach deal to move student loans to market rates

By Elvina Nawaguna and Mark Felsenthal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A coalition of Senate Democrats and Republicans have reached a tentative deal with President Barack Obama that would roll back a recent spike in interest rates on new federal loans for college students and instead move the loans to a market-based rate.

Lawmakers are trying to secure a retroactive fix before the next educational year starts, after interest rates on millions of new federal student loans automatically doubled to 6.8 percent on July 1.

Unless Congress agrees on a fix, about 7.4 million students with federal Stafford loans will be affected and could end up paying up to $4,000 more in interest rates for a four-year degree program.

The deal, which followed extensive negotiations on Wednesday, would retroactively move the loans for the coming school year to a market-based rate that would roughly work out to 3.86 percent this year for undergraduates.

Congress currently sets the level of federal student loan interest rates, and critics of the system say it unfairly subjects students to political whims.

"It is refreshing that on such an important issue we stopped playing politics with our students' future to come up with a bipartisan, permanent fix that lowers interest rates for all students," said Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

The deal would tie interest rates on undergraduate subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans to the 10-year Treasury note plus 2.05 percentage points, and plus 3.6 percentage points for graduate loans.

It would cap rates at 8.25 percent for undergraduates, 9.5 percent for graduate students, and 10.5 percent for PLUS loans for parents who borrow to pay for their children's college.

A senior administration official said Obama supports compromise legislation that would hold down interest rates and was involved in the Senate negotiations.

A Democratic official said the measure would not raise money by charging students higher rates and would protect students from future rate rises. Democrats insisted they would not back any plan that uses student loans to fund the budget deficit.

Lawmakers haggled for months over student loan rates but failed to reach a deal before the rates doubled on July 1.

"This compromise is a win-win for both students and taxpayers," said Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma. "Tying interest rates to the market allows students to take advantage of historically low rates while ensuring taxpayers will not have to foot the bill for arbitrary rates set by Congress."

Critics of market-based interest rate plans say they would help students immediately, but put them at risk of paying higher interest in the future as the economy improves and rates rise.

Such concerns are compounded by the recent jump in Treasury yields after the Federal Reserve announced that it planned to start scaling back its stimulus program that has kept interest rates low.

It is not clear whether the House of Representatives would move swiftly to approve an agreement like the one reached by the senators, but it passed a similar one in May.

House Speaker John Boehner said he had not yet seen the details of the Senate deal. "But it clearly follows the structure of the House bills. When we see the details, I am hopeful that we'll be able to put this issue behind us."

The Senate is expected to vote on the deal by next week.

Felicity Jones may want to just stop talking for a while. At least, that is probably how Marvel would prefer it.

Jones previously appeared to have tipped off the fact that she is playing the Black Cat in the upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man 2." Now, in an interview with View London, Jones may have tipped off some other characters.

"It's all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I'm the Goblin's girlfriend -- I'm in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I'm on the dark side," Jones said.

When asked if she can reveal her character's name, Jones said, "It's all in the vaults of Marvel. I love all that secrecy, I think it's great. It builds anticipation, there's too much transparency in everything these days."

A Green Goblin?appearance was not previously confirmed in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." We did know that Dane DeHann?is playing?Harry Osborn?in?the sequel to the 2012 film. Osborne is the young man behind the mask and atop the green glider, after he takes over for his father, Norman, played by Chris Cooper.

It seems unlikely that Jones would be dating Cooper, so...?

Mayor Bloomberg's Lunch With President Obama

Mayor Bloomberg regularly sends out a public schedule listing events for the upcoming day. But in a review of the mayor's full 2012 daily calendar obtained through a Freedom of Information Law request, one of the most interesting events was kept under wraps.

On February 22, 2012, Bloomberg flew to Washington, D.C. mid-morning and had lunch with President Obama at the White House.

That meeting wasn't listed on his public schedule at the time. The mayor's office still won't say precisely what the meeting was about. But Obama's re-election campaign was in full swing then; Mitt Romney was still busy fighting primary battles.

Both campaigns actively sought the mayor's endorsement, hoping to curry favor with independent voters.

The mayor waited until November - after Sandy - to endorse Obama citing his concerns about climate change.

Egypt's army chief defends ousting president

CAIRO Facing unrelenting pressure from Muslim Brotherhood protesters, Egypt's military chief sought to justify his decision to remove Mohmmed Morsi from office, saying Sunday in a televised speech that the Islamist leader had violated his popular mandate and antagonized state institutions.

The comments by Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi ? his first since the president's ouster nearly two weeks ago ? came as the designated interim prime minister pushed ahead with talks to form a new Cabinet this week.

Reform advocate Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in as Egypt's interim vice president for international relations on Sunday. The move reinforces the role of liberals in the new leadership who are strongly opposed to the Brotherhood.

Several secular-minded candidates also have been approached to lead the foreign, finance, culture, information and other key ministries. Nabil Fahmy, who served as Egypt's former ambassador to the United States for over a decade under Hosni Mubarak, was tapped to be foreign minister, according to state media.

The United States sent its No. 2 diplomat in the State Department, William Burns, to Cairo to meet with interim government officials as well as civil society and business leaders during his two-day visit. Burns is the first high-level American official to visit since Morsi's ouster.

Many in the international community fear the ouster of Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, would undermine Egypt's transition to democracy.

The State Department said Burns would underscore U.S. support for the Egyptian people and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government. The United States has called for Morsi's release. Since his ouster, Morsi has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed location.

El-Sissi said the armed forces acted to remove Morsi on July 3 according to the will of the people as the country was sliding toward deeper polarization and more violence. The Islamist leader was the first democratically chosen leader after a narrow victory in elections last year.

"The armed forces sincerely accepted the choice of the people, but then political decision-making began stumbling," el-Sissi said. "The armed forces remained committed to what it considered the legitimacy of the ballot box, even though that very legitimacy began to do as it pleased and in a way that contradicted the basis and the origin of this legitimacy."

Morsi's election came after months of turmoil following the 2011 revolution that removed autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak from office, in a rocky transition that was marred by persistent protests, political disagreements and an economy teetering on bankruptcy.

His supporters say the military staged a coup in a bid to undermine the rising influence of Islamists, and thousands have camped out for days near a mosque in eastern Cairo to demand he be reinstated. The Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Morsi to power, has called for massive protests Monday to escalate pressure on the military. Some Muslim Brotherhood leaders have called for el-Sissi to be removed, and put on trial accusing him of treason.

Brotherhood spokesman Gehad el-Haddad responded to el-Sissi's remarks, saying that the military had no right to act on behalf of the people of Egypt except through "orders of their elected commander in chief," meaning Morsi. In comments posted on Twitter, he said the military also has no right to decide which protest is worthy enough to represent the people.

Morsi was ousted by the military after four days of protests by millions of his opponents.

El-Sissi said Morsi "entered into a conflict with the judiciary, the media, the police and the public opinion. Then (he) also entered into a conflict with the armed forces." He didn't elaborate on the nature of the conflict with the military, but said that comments about the military offended "and were considered a stab to the national pride."

El-Sissi, speaking to an auditorium filled with military officers, said the armed forces could no longer stand on the sidelines as millions of Egyptians took to the streets to call for the Islamist leader to step down over allegations he was abusing his power.

The military chief said he frequently advised Morsi and finally reached out to him before giving him a 48-hour ultimatum to reconcile with opponents and address public demands. He said he sent two envoys, including then Prime Minister Hesham Kandil and a trusted legal expert, urging the president to hold a referendum on whether voters still supported his presidency, but the suggestion was rejected out of hand.

El-Sissi appealed to all parties, in an apparent nod to Morsi's supporters, to participate in the new transition, saying it is overseen by an unbiased leader and will restore the right of people to choose.

But continuing its crackdown on the Brotherhood leadership, Egypt's new chief prosecutor ordered frozen the assets of Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie and at least 13 other senior members of the group pending investigations into deadly violence outside the organization's headquarters in Cairo and the Republic Guard forces club.

Meanwhile, the military-backed government pressed forward with its transition plan. ElBaradei, a 71-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, was sworn in as vice president for international relations, although his exact mandate was not clear. The former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog based in Vienna, returned home to assume a role in the anti-Mubarak uprising and became one of the most visible leaders in the badly fractured Egyptian liberal and secular opposition to Morsi's government.

Khaled Dawoud, a spokesman for the National Salvation Front, a coalition of largely secular groups, said ElBaradei was no longer the head of the umbrella organization.

Designated prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi also met with a number of candidates for his new Cabinet, which is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Others expected on the roster are Mohammed Mukhtar Gomaa ? who works in the office of the head of the top learning institute in the Muslim Sunni world Al-Azhar ? as head of the religious endowment ministry. Gomaa, who also heads the faculty of Islamic and Arabic studies in Al-Azhar university, was seen as nod to moderate Islam.

The fast-track transitional timetable included also appointing two panels to amend the constitution passed under Morsi. Those changes would be put to a referendum within about 4 1/2 months, followed by parliamentary elections and the presidential elections.

Violence in the aftermath of Morsi's ouster peaked a week ago Monday when the military opened fire on Brotherhood supporters who were holding a sit-in outside the Republican Guard forces club, leading to hours of clashes. More than 50 protesters were killed and hundreds wounded. The Brotherhood claimed the military opened fire on protesters, while the army says it was responding to Morsi supporters trying to storm the Republican Guard building.

Human Rights Watch said it appeared that "the military and police used unnecessary force" and that prosecutors have investigated only Brotherhood supporters and leaders for their alleged roles in the clashes, but not security forces.

"It is not clear from the footage which side used live ammunition first," according to HRW's statement Sunday, which added that "what is clear... is that the army responded with lethal force that far exceeded any apparent threat to the lives of military personnel."

Meanwhile, violence was on the rise in the restive Sinai peninsula. Soon after midnight, militants fired a missile at a moving armored police vehicle south of North Sinai's capital el-Arish, hitting instead a nearby bus carrying workers going to a local cement factory, security officials said. Three factory workers were killed and 16 were injured, including three in serious condition, medical officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Security officials said militants also blew up a police station under construction in central Sinai by detonating explosive devices, leaving a resident seriously injured.

The secretary general of the Brotherhood's political arm, Hussein Ibrahim, condemned the violence on his Facebook page. Ibrahim called the attacks "staged" with the intention of dragging the country toward violence, and in turn justifying "the coup against legitimacy."

Militant groups have lashed out following the military ouster of Morsi, targeting police stations and security checkpoints and vowing to drive the military out of the area.

In the past 10 days, at least eight security officers have been killed. Christians in the area have also been targeted. Two Christians were killed, one a priest. A gas pipeline to Jordan was bombed, ending a lull in such strikes.
