Google posts Nexus S 4G Jelly Bean binary files, let the real fun begin

Crespo4G binaries

Google has posted the closed binary files for the Nexus S4G and Jelly Bean today, and that means one thing -- expect about a bazillion AOSP Jelly Bean ROMs to be ready for download shortly. Before you ask, this has nothing to do with any OTA. These are the files that folks need to build Jelly Bean from the source code, and get everything working on Sprint's original Nexus. Developers have been working with the existing 4.1.1 source code since it dropped, but with these files there's 100-percent less hackery needed to get things like cameras, NFC, and Wimax working as intended.

As we saw when the Ice Cream Sandwich binaries were released, it could be more than a month until Google and Sprint get any OTA worked up, so this is a solid option if you need the butter. We all love the butter.

Don't fret if you're not up to speed with things like fastboot and flashing, because there's a great group of fellows in the Nexus S 4G forums who live to play with this sort of thing. Head in there, poke around a bit, then holler for any help you need. You'll be running Jelly Bean in no time.

IRS missing billions in ID theft

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Internal Revenue Service may have delivered more than $5 billion in refund checks to identity thieves who filed fraudulent tax returns for 2011, Treasury Department investigators said Thursday. They estimate another $21 billion could make its way to ID thieves' pockets over the next five years.

The IRS is detecting far fewer fraudulent tax refund claims than actually occur, according to a government audit that warned the widespread problem could undermine public trust in the U.S. tax system. Although the IRS detected about 940,000 fraudulent returns for last year claiming $6.5 billion in refunds, there were potentially another 1.5 million undetected cases of thieves seeking refunds after assuming the identity of a dead person, child or someone else who normally wouldn't file a tax return.

In one example, investigators found a single address in Lansing, Mich., that was used to file 2,137 separate tax returns. The IRS issued more than $3.3 million in refunds to that address. Three addresses in Florida, the epicenter of the identity theft crisis, filed more than 500 returns totaling more than $1 million in refunds for each address.

In another troubling scenario, hundreds of refunds were deposited into the same bank account ? a red flag for investigators searching for ID thieves who may be filing for refunds for multiple people. In one instance, the IRS deposited 590 refunds totaling more than $900,000 into one account.

"We found multiple reasons for the IRS's inability to detect billions of dollars in fraud," J. Russell George, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration, in a statement. "At a time when every dollar counts, these results are extremely troubling."

Topping the list of concerns is the IRS's lack of timely access to third-party information it needs to verify returns and root out fraud.

With so many Americans struggling to pay their bills, the IRS is under immense pressure to process and issue refunds promptly. But taxpayers can start filing their returns in mid-January, while employers and financial institutions don't have to submit withholding and income documents for taxpayers to the IRS until the end of March. That means the IRS often issues refunds long before it can confirm the veracity of what's listed on taxpayer returns.

IRS officials said the growth of identity theft-related fraud is one of its biggest challenges. Already this year, the agency has stopped almost $12 billion in confirmed fraud, it says. And it says its criminal investigators are actively pursuing those who perpetrate fraud.

"If the IRS determines a refund has been issued improperly, we will attempt to recoup the funds," said IRS spokeswoman Michelle Eldridge.

The IRS agreed with the inspector general that Congress should expand the agency's access to resources that could help it fight theft, including the National Directory of New Hires, a database created to help states enforce child support orders. But IRS officials disputed the notion that $21 billion in fraudulent returns could be issued over the next five years, arguing that the estimate didn't take into account the IRS's stepped-up compliance and prevention efforts.

For those who fall victim to identity thieves, the recovery process can be less than smooth. A separate report by the inspector general in May found that the IRS wasn't providing good customer service and proper assistance to victims of ID theft, increasing the burden for those whose identities are stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has listed identity theft as the No. 1 consumer complaint for the past 12 years.

Dear Dick: Actions should match words | Globe SLCC

"Dear Dick"
Dear Dick,

I think you have been very frugal with the truth. If you could budget the government the way you do the truth, we would have enough money to keep higher education affordable.

For example, you cannot be for and against gay marriage. It is one or the other. Unless you are very confused and cannot make up your mind, it is very dangerous and concerning for the citizens when their leader is in such a state.

You have said, ?higher education can?t be a luxury ? it?s an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford.? I don?t see how that statement corresponds with tuition rate hikes, student loan rate hikes, and a new Pell Grant lifetime limit.

The Pell grant that was available to students in order to help them receive an undergraduate degree was limited to the total of 12 semesters of credit.

For students who are returning to school to change their career in a depressed economic state, this is not good.

I attended college and received a Pell grant after high school. After working for years in that field, I was laid-off and needed to return to school to obtain more education.

I totally agree: ?community colleges play an important role in helping people transition between careers by providing the retooling they need to take on a new career.?

When I was laid off I chose to go back to community college. I needed something that was affordable and offered good education.

I was very relieved when I received a letter from financial aid saying that my Pell grant had been approved. Imagine my surprise when

I received a second notice from financial aid saying your grant has been changed because of the Pell Grant lifetime limit. Now because of the lifetime Pell grant limit I will most likely not be able to finish my education.

You also said ?we have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and their schools. We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible.?

So how do your actions fit with what you have said? They don?t seem congruent to me.

I would really appreciate a politician, president or just a person who has authority to actually say what they really mean. And have the integrity to actually stand by and back up in action what they say.

I believe you said it best when you said ?if people cannot trust the government to do the job for which it exists?to protect them and promote their common welfare?all else is lost.?

Sincerely,

Teresa Piedad

Break out the Champagne: More legal moonshine coming | The Biz ...

More moonshine ? yes, corn liquor ? may be coming to a store shelf near you.

The city of Dawsonville has given the final toast that will allow Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery to produce moonshine for retail sale in the months ahead.

Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery joins Milledgeville ?based Georgia Distilling Co. as two of only a handful of ?legal? moonshine producers in the country.

?We are testing equipment now that we have the green light from the state,? Dawsonville Moonshine owner Cheryl Wood told The Gainesville Times. ?We will be in production in August.?

The distillery will rely on a 250-gallon copper still, two 415-gallon stainless steel mash tanks, a 1,050-gallon stainless steel mash tank and an ample supply of grains and sugar. It will sell its bottled corn liquor to a wholesaler, which will then supply it to a distributor, who will sell the product to retailers.

The company wants the liquor ready for the 45th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival on Oct. 26-28, according to the Times.

Georgia Distilling began producing 90-proof Goodtime Moonshine in 2011 and distributes it through United Distributors, the state?s largest alcohol distributor.

Tottenham beats Red Bulls 2-1 in friendly

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:21 p.m. ET July 31, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Gareth Bale and Gylfi Sigurdsson scored second-half goals to lead English Premier League club Tottenham to its only win on a preseason tour of the U.S. with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Tuesday night.

The win gave the EPL's fourth-place finisher last season the New York Cup, marking the second time in three years the Spurs have won a trophy in the Big Apple. They previously beat the Red Bulls 2-1 in the 2010 Barclay's New York Challenge.

Sigurdsson snapped a 1-1 tie in the 64th minute after finding a sliver of space between himself and Red Bulls defender Markus Holgersson deep on the left side. He hooked a high shot into the upper right corner past leaping Red Bulls goalie Bill Gaudette.

Bale, playing at forward instead of midfield with Tottenham carrying only one front-liner on the three-exhibition tour, evened the game in the 54th when he jumped over the shorter Dax McCarty and headed in a corner kick.

Kenny Cooper, a 13-goal scorer in the regular season, put the Red Bulls ahead 1-0 in the 8th minute with a penalty kick after defender Jan Vertonghen took down former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill in the box.

Cooper converted with a low shot near the left post, and it stood as the Red Bulls' only shot of a sluggish first half for both teams.

The Spurs fared only slightly better, getting off five shots but only two on goal. One of those was thwarted by a leaping Gaudette, who lifted Bale's high, hard shot just over the crossbar in the 12th minute.

Cahill, signed by the Red Bulls last Thursday, spent the previous eight seasons in the EPL, scoring 68 goals in 278 appearances with Everton.

Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry sat out to rest after an intense stretch of games and midfielder Rafa Marquez was a late scratch with discomfort in his left calf. He was replaced by Connor Lade.

In the first two matches on its tour, Tottenham drew with the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-1 and played to a scoreless draw with EPL rival Liverpool.
