Less couch time equals fewer cookies

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Simply ejecting your rear from the couch means your hand will spend less time digging into a bag of chocolate chip cookies.

That is the simple but profound finding of a new Northwestern Medicine study, which reports simply changing one bad habit has a domino effect on others. Knock down your sedentary leisure time and you'll reduce junk food and saturated fats because you're no longer glued to the TV and noshing. It's a two-for-one benefit because the behaviors are closely related.

The study also found the most effective way to rehab a delinquent lifestyle requires two key behavior changes: cutting time spent in front of a TV or computer screen and eating more fruits and vegetables.

"Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," said Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and lead author of the study published in Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart disease and cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," Spring said. "This approach simplifies it."

With this simplified strategy, people are capable of making big lifestyle changes in a short period of time and maintaining them, according to the study.

Spring wanted to figure out the most effective way to spur people to change common bad health habits: eating too much saturated fat and not enough fruits and vegetables, spending too much sedentary leisure time and not getting enough physical activity.

She and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients, ages 21 to 60 years old, with all those unhealthy habits into one of four treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure.

During the three weeks of treatment, patients entered their daily data into a personal digital assistant and uploaded it to a coach who communicated as needed by telephone or email.

Participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the three-week treatment phase. But when that phase was completed, patients no longer had to maintain the lifestyle changes in order to be paid. They were simply asked to send data three days a month for six months and received $30 to $80 per month.

"We said we hope you'll continue to keep up these healthy changes, but you no longer have to keep them up to be compensated," Spring said.

The results over the next six months amazed Spring. "We thought they'd do it while we were paying them, but the minute we stopped they'd go back to their bad habits," she said. "But they continued to maintain a large improvement in their health behaviors."

From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the six-month follow-up, the average servings of fruit/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9; average minutes per day of sedentary leisure went from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7 and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.

About 86 percent of participants said once they made the change, they tried to maintain it. There was something about increasing fruits and vegetables that made them feel like they were capable of any of these changes," Spring said. "It really enhanced their confidence."

"We found people can make very large changes in a very short amount of time and maintain them pretty darn well," Spring said. "It's a lot more feasible than we thought."

OG iPad prototype with dual dock connectors hits eBay, teases us with convenience we never had

Image

We're very used to Apple prototypes showing up on eBay. It's not often that we see unreleased iPads get the auction treatment, however, which makes a new listing that much more interesting. A 16GB WiFi version of the original iPad has popped up sporting a second dock connector on its side, a feature that we'd previously only spotted in Apple design patents. The advantage, of course, would be to keep the iPad powered and synced while it's playing a favorite movie in landscape mode. While we don't know how one aaps69 managed to get hands on the tablet, there's some clear signs that the seller didn't just carve an extra hole in the aluminum for kicks: the slate is running the familiar SwitchBoard tool that Apple uses for in-house diagnostics, and there's a raft of old and incomplete part details that suggest this particular iPad was never meant for store shelves. We'll likely never know why Apple left us in a land of solo dock connectors, but we'd take a peek at the source link before it's gone, as more recent Apple prototypes at auction tend to return to the source quickly.

There is no such thing. When you buy real estate, the buyer submits an offer to purchase in writing to the seller. AThe offer to purchase agreement sets forth the contingencies under which the sale will not occur.

Your question seems to imply some sort of cancellation period. There is not one for regular real estate in NC. The three-day cancellation rule only applies in general to in-home sales and maybe things like fitness club contracts.

If this is a time-share, you need to read the contract - it will specify the time in which you have to cancel. If you are going to cancel, you need to do it as provided for in the agreement by sending written notice to the specified address.

Spurs and Thunder star in NBA?s Western Conference Finals: 10 extra dimensions

The clash of the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA?s Western Conference finals may fly a bit under the national radar when it opens Sunday ? at least for casual sports fans. Played far from the media capitals on either coast, it may seem an intramural regional tussle. But for hard-core fans, this has ?must watch? stamped all over it. Here are 10 factors that make this showdown intriguing.

- Ross Atkin,?Staff

1. Texas vs. Oklahoma rivalry

There?s always a McCoys vs. Hatfields flavor whenever these neighboring states hook up in sports. The stakes (i.e. bragging rights) are highest in football, especially in the traditional Red River Rivalry, the annual shootout between the teams of the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma. But things have been heating up collegiately in basketball in recent years, and with the Thunder?s arrival in? Oklahoma City in 2008, the NBA represents a new front for competition between the states.

Ironically, three of Oklahoma City?s players, including its biggest star, Kevin Durant, are Texas products ? Durant and Royal Ivey played for the University of Texas, while center Kendrick Perkins entered the NBA directly from Clifton J. Ozzen High School in Beaumont, Texas. The Spurs, meanwhile, have only one Texan on their roster (Cory Joseph) and no Oklahomans.

Free admission to South Florida museums for service members and their families

At ease, soldier!

Report with your family on the double to Bonnet House and Gardens in Fort Lauderdale or to one of 16 other South Florida museums and gardens for some needed R&R.

Beginning Memorial Day, the Blue Star Museum program's Operation Appreciation will offer free entry to more than 1,600 U.S. museums for active-duty military and their families. The program will run through Sept. 3.
Tropical tranquillity abounds at Bonnet House, the historic 35-acre estate of Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett.

Swans glide across the lily pond and wander among the orchids, one of the largest collections in the Southeast. Manatees and wild Costa Rican squirrel monkeys occasionally drift into the Boathouse Canal.

"We are delighted to offer free admission to military members and their families as a thank you for serving our country," says Monica Estevez, marketing manager for the nonprofit museum. "They can experience a part of Florida's history and also enjoy our beautiful grounds. Be sure to stop by to say hello to Peaches, our Moluccan cockatoo."

The site and home, built in 1920, was donated by Mrs. Bartlett to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2008, the National Trust and the Florida Trust designated it as one of America's 11 most-endangered sites because of surrounding development, according to BonnetHouse.org.

Other South Florida venues offering free admission as part of the program include the Historic Stranahan House, the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami and the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach.

The deal is offered to active-duty members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve, and up to five family members with ID.

Founded in 2010, the program is a collaboration between Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Defense.

VicMan Visage Lab for iPhone and iPad review

VicMan Visage Lab for iPhone is an app that will give your portraits a complete makeover with just the tap of a button. I'm always fairly skeptical of these types of apps because they have the potential to produce results that look very fake and overdone, but not VicMan Visage Lab -- the results are very good!

(AP) ? Space station astronauts floated into the Dragon on Saturday, a day after its heralded arrival as the world's first commercial supply ship.

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit, the first one inside the docked capsule, said the Dragon looks like it carries about as much cargo as his pickup truck back home in Houston. It has the smell of a brand new car, he added.

"I spent quite a bit of time poking around in here this morning, just looking at the engineering and the layout, and I'm very pleased," Pettit said from the brilliant white compartment.

To protect against possible debris, Pettit wore goggles, a mask and a caver's light as he slid open the hatch of the newest addition to the International Space Station. The complex sailed 250 miles above the Tasman Sea, just west of New Zealand, as he and his crewmates made their grand entrance. The atmosphere was clean; no dirt or other particles were floating around.

"This event isn't just a simple door opening between two spacecraft ? it opens the door to a future in which U.S. industry can and will deliver huge benefits for U.S. space exploration," the Space Frontier Foundation, an advocacy group, said in a statement.

The California-based SpaceX ? formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? is the first private company to send a vessel to the space station. It's run by Elon Musk, a billionaire who helped create PayPal and founded the electric car company Tesla Motors.

Now that the space shuttles are retired, NASA is handing over orbital delivery work to American business in order to focus on bigger and better objectives, such as getting astronauts to asteroids and Mars. The space agency hopes astronaut ferry trips will follow soon; SpaceX contends its Dragons could be carrying space station astronauts up and down within three or four years.

Flight controllers were ecstatic to be at the cusp of this new commercial era.

"It's great to see you guys inside Dragon. It looks great," Mission Control radioed.

The six space station residents have until the middle of next week to unload Dragon's groceries and refill the capsule with science experiments and equipment for return to Earth. Unlike all the other cargo ships that fly to the orbiting lab, the Dragon is designed for safe re-entry. It will be freed on Thursday and aim for a Pacific splashdown.

The Dragon contains 1,000 pounds of food, clothes, batteries and other provisions. It will bring back 1,400 pounds' worth of gear.

Until now, only major governments have launched cargo ships to the space station. Russia, Japan and Europe will keep providing supplies, and Russia will continue to sell rocket rides to U.S. astronauts until SpaceX or other companies are ready to take over. Several American enterprises are competing for the honor.

Pettit noted that the Dragon ? 19 feet tall and 12 feet wide ? is roomier than the Russian Soyuz spacecraft he rode up in.

"Flying up in a human-rated Dragon is not going to be an issue," he assured reporters during a news conference.

The unmanned bell-shaped capsule was launched Tuesday from Cape Canaveral aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Pettit used the space station's robot arm Friday to snare the craft.

During Saturday's news conference, Pettit played down his role in the historic event. He noted that the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, which opened up America's Western frontier, was commemorated by the pounding of a golden spike.

"This is kind of the equivalent of the golden spike," he said. "And one other interesting detail ? nobody remembers who pounded that golden spike in. The important thing is to remember that the railroad was completed and was now open for use."

Success or failure of the new commercial space effort ? the cornerstone of President Barack Obama's vision for NASA ? does not hinge on a single mission but rather many missions over many years, Pettit stressed.

"Commercial spaceflight will blossom due to its own merits," he said.

Facebook investors could recoup losses in court

CNBC's Jane Wells talks to people in Silicon Valley to get their take on Facebook's IPO and its impact on future IPOs.

By Martha C. White

Retail investors with dreams of instant wealth who bought Facebook shares on opening day may have been disappointed, but they could still wind up with a windfall if lawyers seeking class-action status for lawsuits against the company and its IPO underwriters get their way.

A pair of lawsuits filed in New York and California allege that retail investors were harmed when material information about the company's finances weren't disclosed to them. ?

Experts in securities law have said whether or not plaintiffs will be able to recoup their trading floor losses in a courtroom will depend on the fine print of securities regulations.?What Facebook and its underwriters, including primary underwriter Morgan Stanley, which declined to comment on the suits, knew, and when and to whom they provided information, are the issues on which both lawyers and regulators are focusing.

"It sounds like this is where that case is going to be one of the battlefields," said?David Buckner, a partner at law firm Grossman Roth P.A., whose expertise is in class action suits and securities litigation. "Who has an obligation to speak to who ? that's something that will end up being important."?

Following a Congressional hearing on Tuesday, Securities and Exchange Commission chair Mary Schapiro said, "I think there is a lot of reason to have confidence in our markets and in the integrity of how they operate, but there are issues that we need to look at specifically with respect to Facebook."

Facebook did warn would-be investors of potential challenges to its revenue stream triggered by an increase in mobile users and Facebook's still-poor ability to monetize its mobile base. In an uncharacteristic amendment to its S.E.C. filing just over a week before its IPO, the company warned that these factors had the ability to hurt profits.?

Investors who feel burned and are pursuing legal action contend that the company's cautionary statements weren't specific enough, that Facebook knew that this issue was having more of a negative impact than it let on in the filing, and it tipped its hand only to its underwriters and a handful of analysts.?

"The real issue is how adequate a warning was the May 9 registration statement language," said?Merritt B. Fox, law professor at Columbia University. "Without?knowing the facts, it's hard to know if what the analysts were doing was simply interpreting information that was in the May 9 statement or whether they had additional information to suggest that things were worse."

The Wall Street Journal cited unnamed sources saying Facebook executives contacted nearly two dozen analysts following that amendment and let them ask questions about it. The lawsuits assert that this communication amounted to material information which Facebook, which has said it will defend itself "vigorously," was legally obligated to share with all investors.

"It wasn't the prospect" of future losses, said?David Rosenfeld, an attorney at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, a law firm representing plaintiffs in a suit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Wednesday.?"They already knew? and they told their underwriters," he said.

Living Below the Line 2012: My Diary ? Lords of the Blog

Here, in?my five-day diary,?I reveal how?I survived on porridge, water and vegetable soup as part of my Live Below the Line campaign 2012.

THE RULES

I have to live on ?1 a day for five consecutive days.

Worldwide, 1.4billion people live on this. Thankfully, my ?1 a day is just food and drink, not everything else as well like them.

No gifts, anything used from the kitchen must be accounted for, but I don?t need to allocate for electricity or other living costs.

I will have three meals a day and drink tap water.

I need to avoid coffee, milk, bread, soft drinks, alcohol and meat.

WEDNESDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge/raisins 10p

Lunch ? Lentil and onion soup 16p

Dinner ? Baked potato and beans?58p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

Day one and it?s the Queen?s Speech and it seems appropriate that I start my challenge to highlight extreme poverty today.

The House of Lords is full of people dressed in robes and ready for lunches their guests will enjoy.

Meanwhile, I am in the kitchen heating up the lentil soup I made earlier and carried in on the Tube.

I am full of admiration for the Lords Speaker, Baroness Frances D?Souza, who is also Living Below the Line for charity this week. She welcomes the Queen and carries out all her ceremonial duties while also resisting temptation.

The Queen?s Speech is disappointing. The Government?s previous promise to legislate for 0.7 per cent of GNP to go to Development Aid is missing, although it will happen inthe budget.

A ?500 donation arrives from my friend Annie Lennox.

What a star she is, in every respect. Inspiring.

In the office people offer to buy me coffee, but a key rule in this challenge is no gifts.

I?m glad there are nolate-night votes, and I go home to cook my potato and leave temptation behind.

THURSDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Sandwiches, soup and yoghurt 35p

Dinner ? Soup and sandwich 31p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

Back in the Lords, and I lunch with the Ladies who Live Below the Line.

Six peers are joining LBTL 2012 to raise money for charity, including one from each party, and a Bishop.

Baroness Anne Jenkin, my favourite Tory, has organised a soup kitchen and made soup, sandwiches and yoghurts for 35p per person.

We swap stories of the challenge so far. For those on day four, this helps them get to the end.Faced with the challenge of nowhere to cook later, I grab leftover sandwiches to eat in the evening with the remains of yesterday?s soup.

A fantastic donation of ?4000 comes in from one of the businessmen who support another charity I help, Cash for Kids. His generosity motivates me to battle on.

Heading back to Scotland, I cut the time available for temptation and get the early sleeper train to Inverness, leaving London at 9.15pm and arriving in Stirling 5am. For once I don?t eat or drink in the buffet car. I go straight to my berth and read.

FRIDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Banana 19p

Dinner ? Soup 32p

Tea bags and raisins snack ? 10p

I arrive home in plenty of time to cook porridgefor breakfast.

Despite my patriotic zeal for all things Scottish, I have never liked porridge.

Eating it without milk (too expensive for my budget) is even less attractive. But, adding raisins improves the taste and it is vital for a filling, cheap and healthy start to the day.

Off to Glasgow to meet David Moulsdale of Optical Express, with a banana for lunch on the train.

More offers of coffee and cakes from well-meaning colleagues, but my bottle of tap water is my limit for the afternoon and the ever-generous David agrees to sponsor me.

Meanwhile, Come Dine Below the Line is out on the Channel Four website at www.channel4.com/programmes/come-dine-with-me/articles/come-dine-below-the-line.

We filmed this short version of the popular programme at Anne Jenkin?s house, with Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright among the guests.

It really is excellent and I circulate the link on Twitter and Facebook.

Back home and the cravings hit hard. I am not organised, so have to settle for another pot of lentil and onion soup for dinner. Very boring.

SATURDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Banana 19p

Dinner ? Soup, rice and veg 51p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

The Daily Record want my LBTL diary. For a donation, I agree. Come Dine Below the Line has secured more donations. Edging closer to my target.

Off to the Isle of Arran for a couple of nights. Still badly organised for cooking anything cheap, so it?s a banana again for lunch.

I stop at a charity plant sale, but it is also selling the most delicious homemade cakes. I buy some plants and leave quickly.

Those lovely cakes were almost too tempting, but I must be strong and resist. My stomach protests all the way to Arran.

In Lamlash, I really need to eat something different. Some value stir fry veg from the local Co-op comes to my rescue. A portion of that and some rice and I have a dinner.

It is a beautiful sunset. I would love to sit out and look at the sea with a beer in hand, but that will have to wait for another weekend.

SUNDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Soup 20p

Dinner ? Baked potato and beans 68p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

Last day. I?ve got headaches worse than a hangover.

Headaches are a noticeable part of LBTL, probably caused by hunger.

My father grows veg, so leeks and carrots from him for a last pot of soup save a few pennies. This is allowed, as long as I allocate the costs of growing them.

An old university friend living in Australia has spotted my updates on Twitter and posts a ?500 donation online.

After all these years, I am touched by his generosity and I know now I will make it to midnight.

An old school friend I have not seen for years offers a drink or a pub lunch but I can?t, so we chat walking in the rain instead. I must be mad.

Midnight approaches and other friends register late donations.

All these contributions, large and small, are appreciated, and they will help our project make a difference in Malawi.

I have made it. Five pounds lighter. Raised more than ?13,000. Chuffed.

Device may inject a variety of drugs without using needles

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? MIT researchers have engineered a device that delivers a tiny, high-pressure jet of medicine through the skin without the use of a hypodermic needle. The device can be programmed to deliver a range of doses to various depths -- an improvement over similar jet-injection systems that are now commercially available.

The researchers say that among other benefits, the technology may help reduce the potential for needle-stick injuries; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that hospital-based health care workers accidentally prick themselves with needles 385,000 times each year. A needleless device may also help improve compliance among patients who might otherwise avoid the discomfort of regularly injecting themselves with drugs such as insulin.

"If you are afraid of needles and have to frequently self-inject, compliance can be an issue," says Catherine Hogan, a research scientist in MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering and a member of the research team. "We think this kind of technology ? gets around some of the phobias that people may have about needles."

The team reports on the development of this technology in the journal Medical Engineering & Physics.

Pushing past the needle

In the past few decades, scientists have developed various alternatives to hypodermic needles. For example, nicotine patches slowly release drugs through the skin. But these patches can only release drug molecules small enough to pass through the skin's pores, limiting the type of medicine that can be delivered.

With the delivery of larger protein-based drugs on the rise, researchers have been developing new technologies capable of delivering them -- including jet injectors, which produce a high-velocity jet of drugs that penetrate the skin. While there are several jet-based devices on the market today, Hogan notes that there are drawbacks to these commercially available devices. The mechanisms they use, particularly in spring-loaded designs, are essentially "bang or nothing," releasing a coil that ejects the same amount of drug to the same depth every time.

Breaching the skin

Now the MIT team, led by Ian Hunter, the George N. Hatsopoulos Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has engineered a jet-injection system that delivers a range of doses to variable depths in a highly controlled manner. The design is built around a mechanism called a Lorentz-force actuator -- a small, powerful magnet surrounded by a coil of wire that's attached to a piston inside a drug ampoule. When current is applied, it interacts with the magnetic field to produce a force that pushes the piston forward, ejecting the drug at very high pressure and velocity (almost the speed of sound in air) out through the ampoule's nozzle -- an opening as wide as a mosquito's proboscis.

The speed of the coil and the velocity imparted to the drug can be controlled by the amount of current applied; the MIT team generated pressure profiles that modulate the current. The resulting waveforms generally consist of two distinct phases: an initial high-pressure phase in which the device ejects drug at a high-enough velocity to "breach" the skin and reach the desired depth, then a lower-pressure phase where drug is delivered in a slower stream that can easily be absorbed by the surrounding tissue.

Through testing, the group found that various skin types may require different waveforms to deliver adequate volumes of drugs to the desired depth.

"If I'm breaching a baby's skin to deliver vaccine, I won't need as much pressure as I would need to breach my skin," Hogan says. "We can tailor the pressure profile to be able to do that, and that's the beauty of this device."

Samir Mitragotri, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of California at Santa Barbara, is developing new ways to deliver drugs, including via jet injection. Mitragotri, who was not involved with the research, sees the group's technology as a promising step beyond jet injection designs currently on the market.

"Commercially available jet injectors ? provide limited control, which limits their applications to certain drugs or patient populations," Mitragotri says. "[This] design provides excellent control over jet parameters, including speed and doses ? this will enhance the applicability of needleless drug devices."

The team is also developing a version of the device for transdermal delivery of drugs ordinarily found in powdered form by programming the device to vibrate, turning powder into a "fluidized" form that can be delivered through the skin much like a liquid. Hunter says that such a powder-delivery vehicle may help solve what's known as the "cold-chain" problem: Vaccines delivered to developing countries need to be refrigerated if they are in liquid form. Often, coolers break down, spoiling whole batches of vaccines. Instead, Hunter says a vaccine that can be administered in powder form requires no cooling, avoiding the cold-chain problem.

Developer: Pols Can't Keep Approving New Casinos ? CBS Baltimore

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? Casinos are not like Starbucks stores: you really can?t have one on every corner.

That?s the word from David Cordish, whose company is opening a huge new casino next month in Maryland.

Yet Cordish warns that the expansion of casino gambling can?t go on unchecked forever. A big problem is the attitude of politicians across the country who view casinos as free money.

?I don?t know how we can control the politicians; they certainly don?t understand the word `oversaturation,?? Cordish
said. ?They think you can have casinos like Starbucks.?

If that attitude continues, Cordish said, ?it?s going to implode on them.?

The expansion of casino gambling has continued rapidly over the last several years, nowhere more fiercely than in the Northeast.

There is serious disagreement within the industry as to whether the market is oversaturated or whether there is room for further growth. But most agree it is tougher to do business in the Northeast casino market than it ever has been before.

The Cordish Company?s Maryland Live!, opening on June 6, will have 4,750 slot machines and cost $500 million.

?Thanks, David, for bringing 4,700 new slots to this market,? joked Don Marrandino, eastern division president of Caesars Entertainment, which owns casinos in Atlantic City and Pennsylvania. ?That?s great news for us.?

Cordish said the casino market needs the stability of knowing how many operators there are going to be, particularly with the 67 percent tax Maryland imposes on its casinos.

He said the state will have four casinos with more slot machines ?than anything in Las Vegas. It?s an experiment that nobody knows how it?s going to turn out. A contest I don?t want to win is Maryland will probably be the king of the oversaturated market with the highest tax rate. It?s a real problem.

?What happens when you put mega-casinos close together is they generally not only oversaturate?the market, they don?t work,? Cordish said. In the Washington D.C. region soon, he added, ?you?ll have four of the largest casinos in the country operating within a short drive of one another.?

But new casinos keep coming. Timothy Wilmott, president of Penn National Gaming, which has 26 casinos nationwide, said the company is interested in new markets in Massachusetts and Texas, and is opening new casinos in Ohio soon.

And Virginia McDowell, CEO of St. Louis-based Isle of Capri Casinos, which owns 15 casinos in six states, said there are
excellent new markets that don?t yet have casino gambling. The company plans two more, including one in Pittsburgh.

She listed Massachusetts, Texas and Florida as prime spots for new casinos, and said even traditionally hostile states such as Georgia, the Carolinas and Kentucky are considering legalizing them.

?Frankly, some of these opportunities are the best untapped gambling markets in the United States,? she said. But, McDowell said, ?the industry lets its best growth opportunities die on the vine, choosing instead to fight each other.?

Mitchell Etess, CEO of Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, said the state?s two Indian-run casinos once had few competitors.

?It used to be just Atlantic City and Connecticut? that offered casino gambling on the East Coast. ?The Northeast is going
to get a little more crowded.?

And part of that will be due to Mohegan Sun, which is also seeking a casino license in Massachusetts.

At the East Coast Gaming Congress, held at the newly opened Revel casino, executives from Atlantic City casinos said offering non-gambling amenities is key to surviving the cutthroat market, particularly in the northeast.

Tony Rodio, CEO of Tropicana Entertainment Inc., said the industry, and especially Atlantic City, needs to play up the other offerings that don?t involve gambling. He said the Tropicana in Atlantic City is fiercely going after mid-week meeting and? convention business.

Marrandino cited the new $20 million ?Do AC!? advertising campaign that Atlantic City recently launched, noting it
deliberately did not show any gambling activities. That was to stress all the other things there are to do in the resort, he said.

But Revel, which many here are hoping will turn around Atlantic City?s five-year losing streak, might instead hurt the city?s casino market, according to Andrew Zarnett, managing director of Deutsche Bank Securities.

?Everybody?s a loser; when you add supply to a market that?s not growing very much, everybody gets cannibalized,? he said. ?We need some of this capacity to close and go away. I would have thought that would have happened two years ago, but the properties are still here.?

Zarnett said he doubts any Atlantic City casino will close until they see whether or not New Jersey will approve Internet gambling and throw the struggling properties a lifeline. He also predicted New York will approve a casino in Manhattan within five years.

Scott Butera?is president of the Mashantucket?Pequot Gaming Enterprise, which owns the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, which also has been hurt by expanded competition in the northeast.

?There?s a feeling you just want to click your ruby slippers together and say, `There?s no place like home,? and things will go back to the way they were,? Butera said. ?That?s never going to happen.? The solution is to ?create a sense of urgency. When survival is the issue, people will rally.?

Writing And Speaking: What Publishers Want - Booth Grady's blog

Lots of writers like to talk about writing books. You hear very few talking about writing book proposals. Maybe that's why it's easy to forget that a strong book proposal is the first step to getting a great deal for your non-fiction book. It's where you make the big pitch and tell the editor everything that's going to make him or her want to buy.

A book proposal is also a great time saver for you because you'll find in the course of researching your book proposal whether or not your idea is viable, or whether your category is already crowded with similar books. Here are the parts that make up a book proposal, and a few tips on how to make it really stand out to a potential publisher.

Title Page

This is the first page of the book proposal. Your title should be centered and printed about two-thirds of the way down the page. In the bottom left hand corner you'll type in your name, address, phone number, email address and the name and contact information for your agent.

Overview

You'll want to have two to three pages explaining the overall premise of your book. You'll also want to include a Table of Contents that shows what points will be covered in each chapter.

Bio/Credentials

This isn't just your usual resume stuff, this is a big opportunity to sell yourself as THE person to write the book. Write it in the third person starting with your education and credentials. You'll want to point out any experience that specifically relates to the subject matter of the book. Have you written articles or previous books on the topic? Note those as well. List any public speaking that you have done and will do in the future, including television and radio interviews. Include a really nice photo. It doesn't have to be a glamour shot, but you do want to look interesting and engaging. A 5"x7" is fine.

Competition

The publisher will want to know if there are books similar to yours already out there. It will help them to see that there is a market for such books. At the same time, you'll want to point out how your book will be different, or better, than what's already out there. Do not trash someone else's work. It's bad form. It's enough to say a competitor's book left something out, or doesn't cover a certain aspect. If you don't know what competing books exist, you can look them up in Books in Print. Most libraries have it in the reference section.

Outline

This will be your chapter-by-chapter outline showing what you will cover, point-by-point, in each chapter. You can plan on allotting about half a page per chapter.

Sample Chapters

This is where you get to show that you really can write! You should submit at least three chapters of content. It doesn't have to be the first three chapters, but if you haven't written anything yet those may be the easiest to do. Then again, some writers like to start in the middle of a book! The main key here is to be good--no typos, no misspellings and no factual errors.

Marketing

The marketing section of your book proposal is so important that many publishers will often read it first. So make sure you spend the time to make this the best it can be. Lay out your whole marketing plan here. Explain who your target audience is, how big it is and why they will buy this book. How do you plan on reaching them? Are you buying your own advertising? If so, in what publications and what is their combined circulation? Will you be reaching out to book clubs, corporations or college classes where you book could be taught? How can you make your book stand out against the ones that are already out there? You want to make the case that there is a ready made audience out there and all the publisher has to do is reach out and grab them by signing you.

Promotion

Remember, a publisher wants to acquire you and your connections, so this is another important section of the proposal. How will you put yourself out there for your book? You'll want to explain if you'll be doing public speaking, or maybe you have a huge list you communicate with via newsletter every month. How many are on your list? If you plan to hire your own publicist, put that fact in as well. Do you have famous connections that will help you get great blurbs? Do you have a budget? If so, how much? Yes, they do want to know if you plan on spending some of your own money!

Publishing Details

Here you'll detail the length you propose for the book (in words) and whether the book will have any illustrations or photos. You'll also want to give an estimate for the time you'll need to turn in the finished manuscript.

And that's it. When your proposal is done you might want to hire an editor or a book consultant to go over it and give you some strong feedback. That way you'll know you have it in the best shape possible and you can feel confident when you're sending it out.
