GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Former secretaries of state Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell say the nation's growing debt is a threat to U.S. security.
?
The Grand Rapids Press reports their comments came Monday night during the annual dinner of the Economic Club of Grand Rapids.
?
Albright says the nation's increasing deficit is a national security issue. And Powell told the crowd that no business would be run the way Washington runs the nation's business.
?
Albright says higher taxes are a part of a solution. Powell says Americans must spend less and save more, and insist lawmakers do the same.
?
Albright and Powell answered questions for about an hour. Other high-profile keynote speakers to the club in recent years have included former President George W. Bush and former President Bill Clinton.
